Increasing demands on the NHS as the winter crisis deepens
NHS winter crisis ‘worst in a decade’
NHS winter crisis – The Chief Executive of the GMC; Charlie Massey yesterday released a statement detailing concerns expressed by doctors over the increasing demands on staff as the NHS winter crisis deepens.
Doctors are reporting an unprecedented demand on services, and quite possibly the worst in over a decade.
According to a recent article in the BMJ, he is reported to have said that that whilst the GMC has no role in how tax payers money is spent in the NHS they do have a responsibility to ensure hospitals are a safe training environment for doctors and patients and will act where there is evidence that this is not happening.
He also pointed out that the GMC recognised that doctors across the United Kingdom were doing their very best to maintain standards of care for patients. “They are telling us that there is unprecedented demand on services and that concerted action is now needed to address this,” he stated. “As the body which oversees medical education and training across the UK, we are concerned by what doctors are telling us.”
NHS under mounting pressure, strain mounting on staff, and sometimes the best care simply cannot be maintained. Here, mistakes are more likely to be made."
The GMC’s main function is to protect the public by ensuring that doctors meet the standards set and take action where it is believed that doctors may be putting the safety of patients at risk. With mounting pressure on all NHS services across the UK and the Red Cross suggesting the NHS was facing a “humanitarian crisis” can those GMC standards realistically be met?
Even the most dedicated of doctors working to full capacity under severe pressure can find themselves in a situation where mistakes are likely to be made. If you have made a mistake at work under pressure and a complaint has been made contact us. We can help.
